JERUSALEM the only non-military DRUM HORSE
Jerusalem, the drum horse of the Welsh Horse Yeomanry, is a Clydesdale gelding standing 18 hands tall.
At 21 years old Jerusalem is nearing retirement and has been the only non-military drum horse in the UK.
A drum horse is laden with two large kettle drums and is mounted by an outfitted rider.
Drum horses are very powerful and strong animals but most importantly a drum horse must have a placid temperament. This is due to the nature of the drum horse's role as leader of processions in large and loud crowds.
A drum horse is controlled by the feet of the rider with the reigns attaching from the drum horse's bit in their mouth to the rider's stirrups holding their feet. This leaves the rider's hands free to strike the kettle drum to the beat of the marching procession.
